Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), also known as medical skin needling, dermal needling or micro-needling, is a minimally-invasive skin rejuvenation treatment designed to improve the skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles as well as scars on the face and body. Micro Derma Needling works using a specialized vibrational stamping device (unlike a manual handheld roller) which creates evenly-spaced ‘micro wounds’ in the dermis of the skin that stimulates the body’s natural collagen production by generating a wound healing response. Over time a thicker layer of tissue will develop which ‘fills in’ the cavities left by atrophic scars and wrinkles.

There are no major contraindications for Collagen Induction Therapy. As with all cosmetic treatments, the ideal candidate should have realistic expectations and be in generally good health. The treatment is suitable for all skin types, unlike some laser or chemical peels procedures. If you have any of the following concerns, you may be a suitable candidate for Collagen Induction Therapy:

    •     Minimise fine lines/wrinkles (especially around the delicate eye and lip areas)
    •     Reduces pigmentation and restricts pigment formation
    •     Improves skin texture and laxity
    •     Reduces the appearance of scars (such as acne, chicken pox, injuries or surgery)
    •     Diminishes stretch marks
    •     Reduces pore size
    •     Naturally increasing the skin’s collagen formation strengthening the skin barrier
Before you undergo any cosmetic treatment, it is important to have a consultation with our qualified beauty therapist to ensure you are suitable for treatment. This will be your opportunity to ask any questions you have about the procedure and for our therapist to explain the pros and cons.

A medical history will be taken and you will be asked to sign a consent form to make sure you fully understand what the procedure involves and any associated risks and complications. Once your therapist has decided you are a suitable candidate, your treatment can go ahead:

The skin is cleaned and sterilized.

A topical anaesthetic is usually applied before treatment to minimise any pain and discomfort.

Hydrating serums are then applied to the skin

The tip of the micro needling device will glide over your skin creating stimulating channels   The length of the needles used on the micro needling pen for Collagen Induction Therapy will vary.  The longer the needle, the deeper into the skin it will penetrate, and the more dramatic results you will see.

Your treatment can take anywhere between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the area you are having treated. After Collagen Induction Therapy Treatment you will notice a slight reddening of your skin and some sensitivity, this is normal. This indicates that your skin is reproducing new collagen and the redness will fade away within 2 days.  You may also get some bleeding and bruising, however this should be minimal and will depend on the length of the needle used during your treatment. The downtime with this treatment is very quick and you should have recovered between 24-72 hours.

To ensure the right healing environment, for 2 days post treatment YOU MUST AVOID using AHA’s (glycolic acid), Retinol (vitamin A) or anything acidic or “active” ingredients. If you’re unsure about your skincare products, please ask our therapist for advice.

For the next 24 hours only use a soothing cleanser, a mild antiseptic solution and a rehydration serum with hyaluronic acid to help hydrate as your skin will become very dry.

Avoid sweaty exercise and sun exposure for 72 hours post-treatment.

Your therapist may also ask you to use a home-use roller and cosmeceutical grade skincare to enhance your treatment results. These home-use devices have much shorter needles than those used in clinics for treatments and are designed to help your skin absorb the active ingredients in any skincare products you are using. Beware of buying these types of products on the internet as you should not be using any medical grade device on your own at home. The best way to ensure you are using the right device is to have a consultation with our beauty therapist who can advise you on the right home-care kit to use and how it can complement any treatments.Since we are not using thermal heat, yes the Derma Micro Needling Pen it is safe to use on any skin colour and skin type with no risk of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation.Because the results of this treatment rely on kick-starting your body’s own collagen production, it can take between four to eight weeks before you start to fully see the benefits.
